Synthetic Biology is a new approach to engineering biology, generally defined as the application of engineering principles to the complexity of biology. Biology has become a new material for engineering. From the design of biological circuits made from DNA to the design of entire systems, synthetic biology is very much interested in making biology something that can be designed.

Autonomia: na obra, implica criação ou emergência de regras internas, e não apenas de comportamentos inesperados, como no caso do conceito de emergência. Um objeto artístico com essas características deve apresentar resultados coerentes, mas os meios para atingi-los devem ser adaptáveis e virtualmente imprevisíveis. Portanto, a autonomia cibernética implica emergência de novos processos, bem como adaptabilidade a mudanças de condições ambientes, sejam elas reais ou virtuais.

INSCRIÇÃO

A inscrição deve conter o memorial descritivo da obra e seu demonstrativo em suporte digital (DVD/CD). Todas as especificidades devem ser detalhadas no projeto escrito. As inscrições devem ser enviadas por correio para:

Digital Media Art Challenge

Turku, the European Capital of Culture for 2011, has initiated the world’s largest media art and new media competition. The aim of the competition is to highlight and support the growing field of digital media, and to emphasise the significance of social media in interacting with others and forming a sense of community. By intro- ducing Live2011.com they wish to recognize and promote the importance of established annual media art events, such as Prix Ars Electronica and EMAF, whose work over the years and its significance to the field is most central.

The total sum of all the prizes exceeds 140,000 euro. Any work entered in the competition will be presented to the global audience online through the Capital of Culture’s Live2011.com site, and live at different media art events and in Turku during the Capital of Culture year. Artists and content producers working in the digital format are invited to enter the competition in eight different categories.

Please note: you can only participate with works published 1st of January 2009 or later!

The 8 categories are divided by:

OPEN: Open is a competition category for anyone who is actively involved in creating online media content.
PARTICIPATIVE MEDIA: Participative Media is a competition category that is open to anyone who is actively involved in creating media art content. The main target group is media artists.
DIGITAL TURKU 2011:Digital Turku 2011 is a competition category open to anyone who is actively involved in creating media content.
CULTURE 2.0: Culture 2.0 is a competition category directed for everyone who is actively creating media content for web. The main target group for this category are new media businesses.
ARTISTIC GAME: Live2011.com Artistic Game is a competition category for anyone who is actively involved in creating online media content. The main target group includes private game designers / groups, and small and medium-sized game companies. The Live2011.com Artistic Game prize is intended to support creative game designing and showcase the talents of innovative game designers.
EVENT AWARDS: Event Awards will be awarded during the media art events such as Assembly Summer and Alternative Party to be held during 2009–2011. The competition category is meant for those individuals and groups participating in these specific events and competitions.
NATIONAL STUDENT AWARD: he Live2011.com National Student Award is a category intended only for students in Finland. The primary target group is, in particular, students in the fields of media and technology.
CREATIVE IDEA FOR MOBILE CITY GUIDE: The main target group for this category includes companies, organisations or individuals specialising in mobile content.

THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
AND CONFERENCE ON NETWORK SCIENCE
10-14 May, 2010

Bringing together leading researchers, practitioners, and teachers in network science (including analysts, modelling experts, visualisation specialists, and others), NetSci fosters interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. The conference focuses on novel directions in networks research within the biological and environmental sciences, computer and information sciences, social sciences, finance and business.

The School part of the event (10-11 May) offers a series of tutorials and lectures, introducing tools and basic results from a variety of research areas of major interest for the study of complex networks. The School presents basic experimental and theoretical developments, as well as educate the research community on standard network databases, tools, and computational resources.

The Conference part of the event (12-14 May) is dedicated to talks presenting the latest results in the field and their applications in various disciplines.

NetSci 2010 School and Conference will be held at various campus locations at the MIT and Northeastern University in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts USA.

Videoslam

Three to four times a year the Videofestival invites amateur film-makers and videofreaks to the VIDEOSLAM – an audiovisual version of a poetry-slam.

The rules are easy: show your video and expose it to the audiences judgement. Whether it’s Trash, Tragedy or Thriller – the winner of the evening will take part in the GrandVideoSlam – the main competition at the Videofestival in June.

The first Slam in the forerun of the 20th Videofestival will be on 17.12.2009!!!! Starting at 20:00hin the Golkante, Herner Straße 13, Bochum.

The second call for papers of the Leonardo special project Lovely Weather: Artists and Scientists on the Cultural Context of Climate Change seeks new cross-disciplinary thinking on sustainability in urban environments, with a focus on creative intervention, social change and non-Western perspectives.

In urban environments we are separated from the consequences of our actions as surely as the tarmac of the road cuts us off from the earth beneath. This physical boundary encourages a phenomenological separation. It is also a symptom and a driver of a global reliance on the private car and fossil fuel. But between the cracks in the pavement, another world flourishes—local activism, recycling, environmental collectives, permaculture, urban gardening.

Artistic and social projects can widen the cracks in the pavements. Such creative innovations might be artworks, social entrepreneurship, scientific intervention or innovations that harness everyday creativity. They might seek to decode the complex relationships between people, nature and technology in urban settings. Or they might be conceived as interventions that can help contribute to profound social change, or suggest alternative possibilities for or critical perspectives on sustainability.

A new relationship is emerging as computing migrates into the environment. When the Earth is mapped, tagged and digitized, it ceases to be inert raw material and becomes instead navigable, computable and manipulable. How will this affect the way that industrial societies have viewed the environment as a resource to be exploited and tamed?

Leonardo is soliciting texts that document the works of artists, researchers, and scholars involved in the exploration of sustainability in urban environments. Themes and issues may include:

* Sustainability in urban environments
* Ubiquitous, pervasive, locative and mobile communication technology
* Growing community
* Sowing seeds of social change.

Linked activity includes an Urban Climate Camp forum at ISEA2008 in Singapore in August 2008, and an exhibition and workshop at Futuresonic 2009 in Manchester, U.K., during May 2009, . Submissions are welcome in all linked strands of activity.

Leonardo Lovely Weather: Art & Climate

Leonardo Publications are inviting paper, special issue and book proposals that deal with artistic approaches to weather, climate and their modifications.

Western societies have progressively dissolved their ancestral link to climate, a link that was critical: the question for food. This is largely a result of massive urbanization and the development of the modern lifestyle. It has been possible to observe a deterioration of sensitivity to meteorology and climate.

Today, very few professions still reveal a direct relationship to climate; our intuitive understanding of it is thus weakened. Artificial indoor climates have given us a sort of second skin but also leveled our general experience of climate. Until recently, in consumer societies, the weather forecast has mainly been used for the organization of one’s leisure, and “talking about the weather” has a social function. It is no surprise, then, that the science of meteorology is still believed to be one of the last “objective” sciences.

From a scientific point of view, climate (as well as weather) can be divided into series of meteorological parameters such as temperature, air pressure, humidity, wind force, etc. However, it seems impossible to conceive it as a totality except in subjectives terms. Weather and climate exist as such only for corporal and sensitive being and can be regarded phenomenologically speaking, as a landscape 1.

Landscape does not exist in nature without the eye, which grasps an expanse of land as a landscape. Weather’s and climate’s existence are similar. The perception of weather and climate is the perception of an arrangement, a configuration of the real. Weather and climate are thus a multidimensional phenomenon in which are combined the contributions of nature, culture, history and geography, but also the imaginary and the symbolic.

Art could help us to question our perceptions and relationships to weather, climate and their changes. Artistic explorations should not be restricted to illustrating our scientific discoveries, as is done in contemporary climate-change showcases. Art could instead help us to experience and reveal our inner participation with weather and climate, the rupture of their balance and its meaning for our inner world, in the same way that landscape artists reframed the relationship of humans to their environment.

Leonardo seeks to document the works of artists, researchers, and scholars involved in the exploration of weather and climate (change), and is soliciting texts for Leonardo Journal and Leonardo Transactions, special issue proposals for the Leonardo Electronic Almanac and book proposals for Leonardo Book Series.

Sub-themes :

We are interested in a very broad array of artworks that encompass visual arts, sound art and music, performance and performing arts, etc, as well as in climate sciences, meterology and social sciences.

Following thematic sub-themes have been defined (but the call is not limited to them):

* Environments: weather and climate works enabling new experiences of environments ;
* Meteorological and climate sciences: artworks questioning and linking to these sciences. What dialogue with air pollution meteorology, weather modification, climate sciences and climate history ;
* Weather and climate technologies: artworks questioning and linking to these technologies as space based global monitoring satellites and their databases, as well as remote sensing technologies ;
* Sustainability: artworks engaged in alternative energy ressources or climate memories for example ;
* Social and political action: weather and climate works which may spur new thinking for action on environments ;
* Weather and climate perceptions and/or narratives: poetical perceptions/ narratives of weather and climate phenomena. What for ontological issues about transience and mutability may be engaged in such artworks ? Artworks engaged in weather and climate fiction (real or imaginary weather/climate phenomena, climates and weather phenomena on other planets).
